Late last week I was?on Melon’s real-time chart checking Nicole’s “MAMA” ranking when I as shocked to see EXID’s three-month-old flop, “Up & Down,” sitting in the top fifty. The song continued to climb over the next few days, and has since peaked at a lofty No. 9.
It turns out that the late success of “Up & Down” is all down to a fancam of the group’s hottest member Hani performing?the song’s pussy-popping choreography at an event last month. The video went viral in Korea last week, sending?“Up & Down” to the top of the charts and turning EXID into the Crayon Pop of 2014.
EXID has been quick to capitalize off the momentum by holding guerilla performances across Seoul, and judging from the fancams, they’re attracting big crowds and some huge fanchants.
By the time the Gaon chart is revealed on Thursday, “Up & Down” will re-debut and probably out-chart?recent singles from a tonne?of far?more popular girl groups.
The strange and unexpected success of “Up & Down” at this stage really cements EXID as the girl group that just won’t die (a.k.a. ‘The Second T-ara’).
If you can remember back to 2012, the girls?had one of the biggest rookie hits?of the year with “Whoz That Girl,” only to have three members leave the group immediately after promo was done. EXID regrouped?and returned with a new-mini album and the single “I Feel Good”; that flopped, but then a remixed version of one of the b-sides (the incredible “Every Night”) was released as a single and became a surprise hit.
Just when EXID?had got some momentum again, they stupidly launched a terrible sub-unit called Dasoni that?completely tanked on the charts. The entire group then disappeared from the K-pop scene for almost two years, and in that time their ex-bandmates formed their own group, BESTie, who managed to become more popular than EXID were.
“Up & Down” was supposed to be EXID’s big comeback song and had the group getting in on the sexy concept trend that’s been so big this year, but it didn’t chart after its initial release and the EXID comeback buzz quickly died down.
It looked like EXID were finally dead, but just look at them now.
I don’t know if they’re going to keep re-promoting “Up & Down” or if they’ll try to rush out a new single ASAP, but either way I’m excited to see what they do next. They’ve always had good?songs (I still play the Hippity Hop mini to this day), and I hope this second wind can produce something on the level of “Every Night” again.
