Gwen Stefani’s ‘Spark The Fire’ Isn’t Too Bad For a Hot Mess

I know that we all dragged Gwen Stefani’s “Baby Don’t Lie” for sounding like a Nicole Scherzinger b-side, but I gotta admit that it kind of grew on me in a so innocuous it’s just easy to listen to kinda way.

If “Baby Don’t Lie” was Gwen’s attempt at appealing to the lowest-common denominator (a.k.a.?people who watch The Voice), then her Pharrell-produced follow-up single, “Spark The Fire,” is Gwen catering to?all the stans that loved her first two studio albums.

Imagine if Gwen took all the songs she did with The Neptunes ?“Hollaback Girl,” “Yummy,” Wind It Up”? and just shoved them all together and hoped for the best.

Gwen shouts and raps (shout-raps?) over typical Pharrell production about how fly and flawless she is, but the song isn’t good enough to co-sign her swag like?“Hollaback Girl” did.

With that said, I still?like it. It’s so danceable! And it’s fucking Pharrell and Gwen Stefani, how can I hate that?

So far this era isn’t coming close?to L.A.M.B. and has yet to yield a song as good as “The Sweet Escape” or “Now That You Got It” (two tracks that helped compensate for a mediocre album), but it’s not like the new Gwen stuff is terrible either.

It’s good(ish), it just isn’t great.
